This is the perfect toy for a little boy who is obsessed with the trashman/ trashcans/trashtrucks. There are 2 versions…the frontloader w/ dumpster and the sideloader with large roll out container. Both are cool, but we prefer the sideloader because the can tips over and the lid bangs just like the real thing. Beware of ordering through Amazon… you don’t get to choose which version you receive…you have to just order and see what you get. Bad marketing…I tried to reorder the sideloader since the first one we received was broken, only to get a frontloader, which we already had. Both versions are very hard to come by…not sold in Toys R Us or Kaybee stores. I have found them at BJ’s and Costco at Christmas time for $18. In any case, a fairly durable toy…realistic and fun.

Our son received this toy as a Christmas present. We promptly loaded it with C batteries and let him play. He was thrilled and really loved the toy!

The problem became apparent the next morning when he went to play with the toy again. The batteries were already dead!!! I could hardly believe it. I got out an extra set of batteries and a screwdriver to replace the worn out cells. When I opened the battery compartment, I noticed that the wrappers on the batteries had split open and the inside of the battery compartment was warped. I assumed that I had used defective batteries and decided to buy a new pack.

Unfortunately, the batteries weren’t the problem with this toy. Just 5 minutes after putting new batteries into the truck, the bottom of the truck was very hot (almost too hot to touch). Turning the truck “off” didn’t help.

I took the truck back to our local Toys ‘R Us and was told by the person at the service desk that they had seen several of these trucks come back for similar problems. Who knows…maybe it was just a bad lot of trucks, but I’d recommend you be VERY careful with this toy.

The orange truck with the trash can on the side is poorly built. It is very easy to knock the can off, and knock the pin out (which is too short). This is very frustrating for kids. Green truck with front dumpster works much better

I don’t understand what the fascination is with this truck but my son (who is admittedly truck/car obsessed already) is in love with this toy. He can work the moving parts pretty well and thinks they are cool, especially the lights that turn off and on and the arm that raises up (we have the green truck), but mostly he likes to push it around the house and ride/sit on it. It is nice because it is the same color and shape as the real garbage trucks we see around town and it is big enough to be fun. So far it has withstood him standing on it, “riding” it, and knocking it off the table onto the carpet. It is by far one of his most favorite toys with or without batteries in it.

Don’t buy this garbage truck. Clearly, Tonka isn’t what it used to be. The garbage can lift is already broken and my grandson has only had it for an hour. It’s very poor quality overall. Further, Amazon sold me some additional garbage cans, which they implied would work on this truck, and they don’t. My suggestsion, look elsewhere for a better brand.
